Develop your knowledge and understanding of nasal discharge in guinea pigs. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Respiratory course bundle.

This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and outcomes of nasal discharge in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – multiple etiologies including infectious and non-infectious; the most common cause is a bacterial infection.
Signs – primary sign is serious or mucopurulent nasal discharge; may also be concurrent ocular discharge.
Diagnosis – bacterial culture and sensitivity from nasal swab, nasal wash. ELISA and IFA, PCR/serology, cytology of exudates, Diff-quick and Gram’s stain, skull and thoracic radiography, CT, MRI, bloodwork, biopsy, oral endoscopy.
Treatment – depends on underlying causes.
Prognosis – based on the underlying cause of the disease, severity, and chronicity. Good to the grave.
