This module looks at diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of dermatophytosis in horses, including:
Cause – Trichophyton equinum.
Signs – scaling, crusting and hair loss.
Diagnosis – signs, confirmed by examination of hair pluckings or biopsy and culture.
Treatment – self-limiting, topical and/or systemic treatment may be used to limit time course and severity of disease.
Prognosis – spontaneous remission unless concurrent immunodeficiency, or re-infection occurs.
