This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of anorexia in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – there are many causes including any condition that leads to pain or discomfort associated with feeding behaviour or stress, including surgery, and any disease condition associated with nausea, toxicity, gastrointestinal disturbance.
Signs – lack of interest in eating, change in defecation, weight loss, dehydration, lethargy, signs of pain/reluctance to move, poor coat condition, dental disease, tachypnea if in pain, masses present (abscess, etc), abdominal distension/tympany.
Diagnosis – history and clinical signs, physical and dental examination, imaging, bloodwork.
Treatment – depends on underlying cause.
Prognosis – depends on underlying cause, severity, and duration prior to presentation.
